Putting First Responders First
We are committed to providing community emergency responders with the information, tools and training that they need to respond in the unlikely event of a pipeline emergency.
We provide emergency responders with the following:
- Location of the pipelines and who operates them
- Instructions on how to recognize a possible pipeline emergency and procedures for how to respond
- Knowledge and understanding of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation’s preparation/procedure for emergencies
Emergency Responder
Education Program
Chesapeake Utilities Corporation’s Emergency Responder Education Program provides emergency responders and 9-1-1 call center personnel unlimited access to free, online training materials designed to help them to respond safely and effectively to any pipeline emergency.
Safety Town
In November 2020, we announced the completion of our state-of-the-art training facility in Dover, Delaware. “Safety Town” now serves as a resource for training our employees who build, maintain and operate our natural gas infrastructure offering hands-on training and fully immersive, on-the-job field experiences. First responders and other community partners also benefit from the simulated environment and conditions they could encounter as they enter homes in the community.

500
Training Sessions
To date, we have provided over 500 training sessions to first responders throughout our service territories.
Collaborating within
Our Community
We meet regularly with first responders in communities near our pipelines and facilities, including police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS), to share Chesapeake Utilities Corporation’s emergency response procedures. We identify the roles and responsibilities of external responders who would support us in the event of an incident.
Building Strong
Relationships
Chesapeake Utilities Corporation forged a relationship with the Florida Fire College as part of our public awareness program in 2016. This relationship resulted in the ability of Florida firefighters to earn continuing education credits for participating in Chesapeake Utilities Corporation’s gas safety course offerings.
We continue to build meaningful relationships with emergency responders near our pipelines and facilities through the arrangement of presentations, facility tours, and tabletop exercises.
Responding to
an Emergency
It is our goal to never have to respond to a pipeline leak. But if we do, we’re ready.
Prevention is a critical component of pipeline safety, and we focus on prevention at Chesapeake Utilities Corporation before issues arise. While our ultimate goal is to prevent all gas releases, we are committed as a responsible pipeline operator to provide a comprehensive incident response.
Our emergency response teams actively participate in drills, field exercises and equipment deployments, working alongside first response agencies to test and practice our emergency response plans.
